How Long Do Goldfish Live For?

What Is the Lifespan of Goldfish?

Many people erroneously believe that goldfish have relatively short lifespans. This belief comes from the fact that many are won as prizes at the local fair or carnival commonly die within just a few days or weeks. Many people contribute this to them having a short lifespan, when in fact these premature deaths are cause by inadequate care.

The truth is that goldfish can live up to 25 years in their natural habitat and between 5 to 25 years as a pet. In fact, the oldest goldfish ever recorded was an amazing 43 years old. The problem is not only poor living conditions at the fair, but also the fact the many people do not know how to care for their fish properly.

Adequate Space

Many families that win a goldfishes at the fair bring it home and place in a fishbowl. These bowls are usually too small for the fish to survive. After all, the standard fish can grow to be about 10-inches long. Most fishbowls cannot support this size of fish.

Experts, say that just one gold fish requires a minimum of 20 to 30 gallons of water. This would require a rather large fish tank. However, outdoor fishponds make a great alternative for goldfish. Depending on the size of the pond, a goldfish can flourish in this type of environment and last for many years to come. Take a look at the aqua one tanks for some great examples.

Another common cause of premature death in goldfish is overfeeding. Many families feed their fish too much food every day. A goldfish only needs a small pinch of food one time a day. This uneaten food will fall to the bottom of the tank and increase the risk of bacteria, which can lead to infections and disease. High quality flake food is the best type of food to use for your goldfish.

Clean Tank

Goldfish require a lot of care if you want them to stay healthy and live for many years. It is very important that their tank be kept clean at all times. This may require you to clean the tank two to three times each monthly and/or to have a filtration system in place. You also need to clean the gravel at the bottom of the tank thoroughly, as well as, any decorations inside the tank.

Even if you care for your fish properly, there are still many types of illnesses and diseases goldfish can have. Whether your purchased your fish at the store or won it at the carnival, it could be at risk for infection and disease. This is because goldfish are typically stored in overcrowded tanks that are not cleaned adequately. If your fish came in contact with other sick fish that are at a higher risk for also getting sick.

It is always best to prepare for your fish before bringing it home. This will allow you to create the ideal environment to place your fish as soon as you purchase it. You should also carefully observe your fish for the first several weeks and look for any symptoms of illness, injury, or disease. If any problems are detected, you can quickly treat the fish and increase its overall lifespan.
